Obtain a DC Commercial Driver's License How do I get a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the first time?Note: Applicants must first have a valid non-commercial driver's licenseObtain a Commercial Learner's Permit

  1. Visit 301 C Street, NW to obtain a DC Commercial Driver's License Manual to study for the knowledge test. Take a CDL knowledge test(s) for the desired permit class and endorsements at 301 C Street, NW. The CDL knowledge test will be valid for 90 days after passing. Have a physician complete a US Department of Transportation Medical Form and Card. Complete the Driver's License/Voter Registration Application* at the DMV Pay applicable fees

  2. Obtain a Commercial Driver's License Learner's Permit. The CDL Learner's Permit authorizes the driver to operate a designated class of vehicles if accompanied by a driver licensed to operate such vehicles.

  1. Schedule a CDL road test by calling (202) 727-5383, 8:15 am to 4 pm Tuesday-Saturday. The road test is given at designated DMV service locations with test times starting between 7:30 am and 2:10 pm Monday-Friday. You must be accompanied to the road test by a driver with a valid CDL of the same class or higher. Please bring the following to your appointment:

    • Valid DC Driver's License and CDL Learner's Permit Valid and stamped US Department of Transportation Medical Card An empty vehicle of the appropriate type for testing the desired CDL class, with a valid registration document

    • If using a government vehicle, a valid driver's license with a "G" (government) endorsement

    Upon successful completion of the road test, apply to upgrade to a CDL at the DMV CDL office located at 301 C Street, NW.

  2. Pay applicable fees
