New Jersey Motor Vehicle Comission

Every commercial motor vehicle operator must be strong enough to drive their vehicle with ease. To drive a commercial motor vehicle, you should be able-bodied and free of physical handicaps. You should not suffer from chronic diseases such as heart trouble, seizure disorders, high or low blood pressure, fainting or dizzy spells, diabetes, or any other physical or mental disability that could reduce driver control, and you must never use narcotics, drugs or abuse alcoholic beverages. To safely operate a commercial motor vehicle, you must be in good physical condition. When you are very Commercial Driver License (CDL) Road Test
The Commercial Driver License road test is required of applicants for Class A and B licenses; applicants for Class C licenses are not required to take a special CDL road test.

Facts about the CDL Road Test:

On the actual road test, a safety specialist will ride with you while you drive in an off-road test area or on a public road course.
The test is divided into three parts:
Pre-trip
Basic Skills
Road Skills
Each part of the test will take about 20 minutes.

Preparation for the CDL road test:

After you pass the written and vision tests, MVC will validate your permit for practice driving.
You must wait 10 days before taking the road test.
After the 10-day period, go to a road test center or Regional Service Center to make an appointment for the initial road test.
Things to bring with you to the CDL road test:

a vehicle* for you to use during the test. Note: the vehicle must have a current inspection sticker, and you must have the current registration document and a current insurance card (unless covered by P.U.C. or federal DOT regulations) for the vehicle.
a valid examination permit
* MVC does not supply the vehicle. If you do not own a commercial vehicle, you may get a vehicle from employer or check the yellow pages.

If you pass the CDL road test:

The examiner will issue an authorization slip for licensing.

Take the permit and authorization slip to a motor vehicle agency to obtain your license.
If you fail the CDL road test:

You must wait at least two weeks before taking the test again.

To reschedule the test, go in person to the same driver testing center or another driver testing center.

If you fail the test several times, MVC may require that you wait six months before taking the road test again.

Commercial drivers: Under federal law, commercial drivers must carry a medical examiner's fitness statement and have it renewed every two years
