To apply for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a Commercial Driver Instruction Permit (CDIP), the applicant must be at least 18 years of age. To haul hazardous materials or to drive interstate, the operator must be at least 21 years of age.In most cases, applicants must certify on the Application for Commercial Driver's License (form R229a) that they meet the minimum physical requirements necessary to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely. They must also carry a medical certificate stating that they meet the federally mandated minimum physical requirements necessary to operate such a motor vehicle.Acceptable Medicals:

Renewals:A CDIP is valid for six months. The CDIP may be renewed once within a two year period. The two year period starts on the date the original CDIP is issued. If the applicant does not obtain a CDL before the second CDIP expires, the applicant must wait until the two year period has passed before re-applying.Duplicates (replacement):A replacement CDIP may be issued if it is lost, stolen or destroyed. The fee charged for a replacement is $8, the same as the fee for a new issue CDIP (effective January 1, 2004 the new fee will be $10). A school bus operator must present a letter from his/her employer to have certain fees waived. If the letter is presented, the operator does not pay for the General Knowledge Test, CDIP, Skills Test, or Proficiency Tests. The operator does pay for the endorsements; i.e., air brakes and passenger. He/She also pays for CDL endorsement/restrictions that allow the operator to carry passengers.
